Schlaich told KBOI-TV on Monday that he will still teach at Fruitland - and may even return to coaching someday down the road - but right now, he wants to spend time with his family.
"As a coach, I've spent more time with other people's kids than my own," Schlaich quipped. He did coach both his adult sons at Fruitland, something he called a career highlight.
In 12 years, Schlaich went 110-23 at Fruitland, guiding the team to the last seven straight 3A state championship games. The Grizzlies were 2-5 in those title games, including a 37-10 loss to Shelley this season.
Before coaching at Fruitland, Schlaich led Parma to the 1996 state A-3 Championship.
Fruitland Athletic Director Beth Holt said Schlaich has given plenty of notice and the school can be patient in its process to hire his replacement.
"I imagine we'll get quite a few applicants," Holt said, adding that which teaching positions come open will impact the hiring process because Schlaich is not leaving his position as weight training teacher.
