State proposes 2013 hunting rules for sage grouse

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho wildlife managers are proposing that this year's sage grouse hunting season rules look a lot like last seasons.

In fact, the Department of Fish and Game doesn't differ at all from the 2012 rules, restrictions and bag limits.

A proposal issued this week calls for a restrictive hunt, with seven-day hunt and one-bird per day bag limit. The rules also call for a two-bird possession limit for the season, which would stretch from Sept. 21-27.

The proposed rules must still be approved by the Fish and Game Commission at its meeting next month.

The sage grouse is a candidate for endangered species listing as its numbers and range have diminished in Idaho and across the West. Still, it's legal to hunt the species in Idaho.
