Sheriff: Man tried to lure dozens of young girls on Facebook
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- A 20-year-old Caldwell man tried to lure dozens of young teen girls into having sex with him using Facebook and several additional social media websites, local police officials said Tuesday.
Alex E. Rangel has been charged with lewd conduct and enticement of children over the Internet. The Ada County Sheriff's Office says Rangel was charged for allegedly having sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. He also is suspected of trying to entice a 13-year-old he met on Facebok in November.
In all, police say he tried to lure more than 24 young girls on Facebook.
"...Parents forget that Facebook is a dangerous place for young teens to be interacting without parental guidance and oversight," Ada County Sheriff's Detective Ryan Pacheco said. "This is a classic case of an adult scrubbing Facebook looking for young girls to take advantage of."
The 20-year-old apparently told the 14-year-old girl he was 17 years old and gave the girl marijuana and alcohol and later had the illegal sexual contact, officials say.
In December, detectives posed as a 13-year-old girl and began talking to Rangel. He eventually was arrested at his home on Mountain Springs Avenue in Caldwell.
He faces up to life in prison.
