It will take roughly 2 weeks to completely fill the 500 miles of main and lateral canals. This means the water will not be available until April 18th or so.
Water managers say this year's water supply was looking grim until recently. Heavy snowfalls over the past few weeks have substantially improved the water supply outlook. We are seeing near normal snowpack levels.
With water starting to flow in the canals starting tomorrow, water managers have a safety reminder for parents.
"Irrigation canals are attractive to young people because of the flowing water. But canals are inherently dangerous and especially for children because the water is deep, very cold and fast flowing. If a child fall in, it is almost impossible for them to get out, even if they can swim," said Greg Curtis of the Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District.
