BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - The Woodland Ale Craft Brewery on Front Street is located right at the entrance to the Connector. In that area signs display several options to where you need to go. But off to the right, not too far from the main highway signs, is a billboard that points you straight to the brewery and it looks just like a road sign.
Boise officials said they had no problem with the bar sign, but the Idaho Transportation Department put a stop to the sign's detour.
"They sent us a letter," Brewery owner, Dusty Schmidt said. "I called them back (and) my first question was, 'what took you so long?' They've been really great, they said they really actually like the sign. They thought it was clever, but rules are rules and we totally understand."
The state law is clear and says in part, no person shall display an imitation of a traffic-control device or signal that attempts to direct traffic near a highway. ITD gave them a month to take the sign down.
Schmidt says that most people liked the sign but there were a few that didn't play along.
"There's a handful that think it's just dumb because it matches all the others, but I don't think they get it," he said.
The bar has a month to take the sign down. Schmidt says he may have a contest to come up with another sign closer to his brand.
