Here in Idaho, we had four in just the past weekend.
The mother of a young man who died on the Boise River spoke to KBOI 2News about Saturday's accident, and how the family's been coping.
And they have a message for anyone with family, whether you're on the water or not.
Carla Wood reads from a passage her son wrote to his wife, based on 1 Corinthians.
Just a month ago, her son Taylor married the love of his life, Michelle.
"Their wedding was magical and everyone said there was something special about it," Carla said.
The family says at 23 years old, Taylor was living the best year of his life.
But on Saturday, his life was cut short, when a boogie boarding accident trapped Taylor under the water.
Despite rescue efforts, he passed away.
"These guys worked above and beyond the duties of CPR and never gave up on their friend," she said, praising both Taylor's friends and emergency personnel on scene.
Taylor was one of four people to die on Idaho's waterways over the weekend.
Two others were in the Snake River.
A fourth person was on Dierkes Lake.
Carla says her son was the family adventurer: he was a mechanic with an artistic flair, who loved Idaho's outdoors.
"He loved to go hiking, fishing, and camping," she said.
And he was a devout Christian, a 2009 graduate of Cole Valley Christian School.
"A great adventure to him as he grew older was so see what God was doing around him."
For Carla, Taylor's passing has given her a new purpose in life: living life to the fullest... Like her son.
"Don't wait until tomorrow on relationships, call that person you haven't talked to in the family, call them now," she said. "It could be the last time you talk to them."
Taylor is survived by three siblings... Shawn, who's 26, Andrew, who's 21, and Bethany, who's 19.
Taylor's memorial service is this Saturday at 1 pm at Cole Community Church, on 8775 W. Ustick Road in Boise.
If you'd like to help out, the family has created the Taylor Wood Memorial Technical School Scholarship Fund.
It's for any graduating senior at Cole Valley who goes on to VO-TECH schools.
