'If they're caught riding their bikes, essentially we'll be evicted'

EMMETT, Idaho (KBOI) - Tenants of the Chaparral Apartments in Emmett, say they received a notice on their door stating kids bikes, skateboards, big wheels and tricycles are not allowed.

"If they're caught riding their bikes, essentially we'll be evicted," said Rachel Hanson, who lives in the complex. "Which doesn't seem fair."

The notice says anyone caught riding a bike after a third violation will be given a 30 day notice to vacate. Hanson's 6-year-old boy didn't quite know how to take the news he couldn't ride.

"He said. 'Oh man, mom, Please can I ride my bike?' And I had to explain it to him we can't do that unless we go away from our house," Hanson said.

Skateboarders are now walking their boards out of the complex before jumping on board. Neighbors say another policy at Chaparral, has to do with kids that draw chalk drawings on the sidewalks. They say the drawings have to removed by the end of the day. "We have to wash off the sidewalk when they're done," Hanson says.

KBOI 2News asked managers at the apartment complex if they wanted to explain their policy change. They wouldn't answer any questions.

But not every tenant is against the new policy. Some explain the complex is a frenzy of kids riding around after school.

"They break stuff, they run over furniture," said Judy Stanberry, another resident. "I am afraid they're going to get in my garden."

The notice from the manager does say they banned bikes for safety reasons and kids were running over plants and knocking over patio furniture. The property manager did say that tenants need to read their policy manuals.
