A thin layer of ice covered the road, so police blocked off parts of I-84. This all started around 5am, but there was an interesting twist that happened behind the scenes. While a KBOI reporter was at the interstate and could see that it was closed, KBOI could not get confirmation from the Idaho Transportation Department.
"This mornings conditions, we made the decision to shut it down, the eastbound side and partially a little bit on the westbound side, partially just to keep people safe," said Sgt. Jens Pattis, of the Idaho State Police.
The transportation department spokesman, Reed Hollinshead said they did not officially close I-84 and that they are the only authority to close a road, but Idaho State Police can block the road for drivers.
Hollinshead went on to say the transportation department thought they could treat the highway with sand to keep traffic moving.
All blockages were cleared shortly after 8am.
