Junior Boone Bartlome broke his C4 vertebra during the playoff game last Friday between Kuna and Bishop Kelly. Coaches say Bartlome went to make a block but tripped and eventually fell into another player. The force knocked his head back and broke his neck.
Kuna Head Coach Lee Leslie has been coaching football around the country for 30 years. In that time he says he's seen several players carted off the field who ended up fine. On Friday he said he knew something was wrong.
"I knew walking out there that he was in a lot of trouble by the way he was positioned and wasn't moving," said Leslie.
During our interview, Coach Leslie became emotional talking about the incident, and needed a second before continuing.
During a rally held at the school Monday Coach Leslie talked with hundreds in an auditorium about the injury. He also says doctors have to wait for swelling to go down to see what the extent of Bartlome's injuries are.
Neighbors and students also spoke about ways they plan to help Boone and his family get through this hard time. They've even set up a website for people to get updates, and are setting up a bank account for donations.
