Human remains of a child found in badger hole near Mountain Home

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office says the remains were discovered by the Idaho Fish and Game on Saturday.

The skeletal remains of a young child have been found in a badger hole north of Mountain Home.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office says the remains were discovered by the Idaho Fish and Game on Saturday off Highway 20 north of the city limits. Authorities believe the remains are that of a child between 1 and 5 years of age.

"It is clear by the condition of the remains that they have been buried for a considerable amount of time," the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Mike Hollinshead told KBOI 2News that detectives believe the body may have been in the ground for 15-20 years, however, forensic testing will be underway soon to get precise dating.

Deputies say there was no fibrous materials such as clothing found by the remains. An archaeologist determined that the remains did not exhibit Native American characteristics.

The remains will be taken to Boise State University to try and determine the age of the bones and the gender.

Police have not not ruled out criminal activity. The sheriff's office is also working with statewide police agencies to determine possible links to other cases, including three missing children cases.
