At about 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, Pullman Police responded to a call about a fight between players from the two teams in the parking lot of the Sacred Heart Church.
They found about 20 people on the scene, including a handful of WSU football players, and one of them was unconscious.
"We're looking at a fairly serious injury here," said Pullman Police Commander Chris Tennant. "Possible brain damage, and fractures of the skull. And so we're trying to determine exactly what happened at this point."
Sophomore Mansel Simmons was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital, and was later transported to Sacred Heart in Spokane. Police believe the fight broke out after the players were asked to leave a nearby party.
It's suspected that the WSU players also caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to a vehicle that the U of I players drove to Pullman in. Later that morning, the church recovered an unloaded 32-caliber semi-automatic pistol in the parking lot, but police can't confirm that it's linked to the fight.
