Eww! Swimmer's itch reported at Horsethief Reservoir
CASCADE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Don't blame the mosquitoes.
Folks visiting Horsethief Reservoir, located eight miles east of Cascade, are coming back with an itchy problem. The Idaho Fish and Game says some people are reporting rashes after swimming in the reservoir.
The culprit? Cercarial dermatitis, or, swimmer's itch.
The itch, Fish and Game says, is caused by a small parasitic worm seeking out a host. The little worms typically seek out waterfowl, but they can penetrate human skin, too.
They die almost immediately, however, they will leave an itchy spot. If you find yourself itching, plan on it lasting a few days. The larvae and itch have no lasting effects on humans.
