Caldwell man who died in police custody identified
NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - Police have identified a man who died shortly after being taken into custody Friday morning.
Nampa PD says officers were called to the Hudson and Canyon street area over reports of a female screaming at about 3 a.m. Friday. Officers in the area spotted a dark full size pickup driving recklessly with no lights.
The driver took off and eventually lost control of the truck near 11th Avenue North and Industrial Road. The suspect, identified Monday as Anthony Firkins Jr., jumped a fence and was eventually found hiding under a trailer. Officers eventually managed to take the 33-year-old into custody despite being non-compliant, NPD says.
Shortly after being restrained, however, Firkins quit breathing. Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital but later died. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Police did not say whether the woman screaming and the suspect are connected.
The Canyon County Sheriff's office is investigating the incident.
