You could almost mash the anticipation with a fork.
"We were interested in it right away," said Jack Rhines of Meridian. "All this talk about dropping a ball in New York. We want our own ball. In this case, a potato."
A crane will raise a 16-by-100-foot foam potato some 200 feet high with the US Bank Building as, well, a backdrop.
The gigantic foam potato will never actually hit the surface of the Grove, it will stop some 20 feet from the ground.
"We've got bands playing from 8 until 11:59 pm," said organizer Dylan Cline. "Right at 11:59 we're doing a sixty second countdown. The potato's gonna drop 175 feet in sixty seconds, and stop. There's a light show and confetti."
Cline's convinced the potato drop will become a New Year's Eve tater tradition with people talking decades from now about where they were when the spud fell.
