Avalanche threat to close notorious stretch of Highway 21
IDAHO CITY, Idaho (KBOI) -- Highway 21 will be closed early Friday afternoon due to threats of avalanche.
The Idaho Transportation Department says the 12-mile stretch between the Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit will close as a safety precaution beginning at 6 p.m.
The area received eight inches of snow this morning, and heavy snowfall, higher-density snow, and strong winds are expected in the area through late tonight and Saturday.
Officials did not say how long they expect it to be closed, but the route will be evaluated regularly for a decision on when to open it back up again. The area is home to about 60 avalanche chutes and account for 90 percent of the Idaho avalanches that affect highways in the state.
