JEROME, Idaho (AP) An inmate whose hand and leg were amputated is suing the Jerome County Jail, saying the lack of shower facilities for the disabled makes the jail unsafe.
Melvin A. McCabe filed the lawsuit in federal court on Feb. 20. The Times-News reports McCabe lost his hand, leg and eye in a dynamite explosion in 1991.
The complaint says McCabe needs a shower equipped with safety rails, a secured and sanitary fold-down shower chair and a handheld shower head.
McCabe says the existing shower facilities place him in harm's way and that he has fallen there in the past.
Jerome County Sheriff Doug McFall says he can't comment on the lawsuit but adds, "We've got what we've got."
McCabe is in jail on misdemeanor drug and driving-violation charges.
