Leading human-rights practice Doughty Street Chambers spilled the news Monday as it congratulated one of its own attorneys: 36-year-old U.K. barrister Amal Alamuddin.
The firm said its lawyers and staff "offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin ... and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married."
The Beirut-born, Oxford University-educated Alamuddin is a member of the firm's international law team and has a high-profile client list. She has advised former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Syria, helped ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko challenge her imprisonment and represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange during his fight against extradition to Sweden.
Clooney's mother has given her reported daughter-in-law-to-be the thumbs up, insisting Alamuddin is a "lovely girl."
The movie star himself has yet to confirm the shock engagement news, but Alamuddin has been spotted wearing what appears to be a huge ring on her wedding finger.
Now Clooney's mother, Nina, has spoken out about the latest reports, stating, "You can say I'm extremely happy. Amal's a lovely girl." Nina Clooney tells the Mail Online, "I like her very much."
The actor's mother also reportedly told the publication, "We weren't at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn't be happier for them. On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him. Amal's world couldn't be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle. ... She is brilliant, she is a very bright woman and at the very top of her career.
"They also share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people."
Nina Clooney reveals she first met the lawyer, who is currently representing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, a year ago.
Goerge Clooney, 52, was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993. He has since been romantically linked to several women, including British model Lisa Snowden, Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis and former professional wrestler Stacey Keibler.
Alamuddin, who was once voted London's hottest barrister in an online blog, is the daughter of prominent Lebanese couple Ramzi and Baria Alamuddin. Her mother was once considered one of the nation's most beautiful women.
