Bates raced to a new school record of 33:37.13 in her first race at the historic Hayward Field, breaking her own record set earlier this season by nearly 13-seconds. The third-place finish earned her a first team All-America nod, the first of her career. The honor is her third overall All-America honor, adding two second-team honors from previous indoor and outdoor seasons.
In just her second outdoor season, Bates ran a beautiful race, hanging around the top-10 for much of the first half. As the race continued, the field spread out with Bates staying among a group of runners who were fighting for fourth. In the final laps she was able to sit on the heels of the third-place spot, finishing with an excellent kick to overtake third in the final lap.
The Elk River, Minn., native becomes the second Bronco women to earn All-America honors in the 10000-meters, following in the footsteps of Abby Peters who placed seventh at the 2000 championship meet.
Bates will compete again on Friday (June 7) in the 5000-meters, an event in which she has earned indoor and outdoor second team All-American honors.
Her three teammates Daveon Collins, Matt Post and Marisa VanderMalle will all compete tomorrow (June 6) throughout the day. Post will be the first to compete; throwing in the hammer finals at 2:30 p.m. MT. Collins will be the next to take the stage, racing in the 200-meter semifinal at 5:15 p.m. MT. VanderMalle will close out the day with the 3000-meter steeplechase semifinal at 6:35 p.m. MT.
