Bates earns All-America honors in the 5K, too

EUGENE, Ore. - Boise State redshirt sophomore Emma Bates earned her second All-American honor in three days, Friday, when she placed seventh in the 5000-meters of the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Elk River, Minn., native raced to a school record of 15:59.35 to snag her second first team All-American honor of the week.

Bates spent much of the race in a pack of runners, hanging around the ninth-place spot. Using great race strategy, she surged in the final 800-meters, making a move up to seventh-place and improving upon her pre-meet ranking of ninth.

Her two All-American honors earned in the meet mark her third and fourth career nods, joining her second team honors in the 5000-meters at the 2012 outdoor and 2013 indoor championships.

The NCAA Championship meet will continue Saturday with a full day of finals. Bates was the final Bronco to participate in the meet after her teammates Daveon Collins, Matt Post and Marisa VanderMalle all competed Thursday.
